I recently discovered a particularly touching sci-fi short film that is a little gem, Blank Shores (2021). I was particularly interested in the premise. In it, director/writer Alex Kyrou explores the emotions associated with the loss of a loved one, our ability to deal with them and our mental state. These are themes that resonate with me a lot, and being set in a science-fiction context, the story had everything to attract my attention.

Emily (Georgina Campbell) is a young woman going through a difficult period, trying to come to terms with the loss of a loved one. She does her best, but her partner, Connor (James Farrar), is absent. Faced with an unsupportive police force and some disturbing dreams, Emily sets out to find Connor. An investigation that takes her into a mysterious and disturbing world.

I enjoyed the dichotomy portrayed by the two main protagonists. Emily deals with her trauma in a strong, assertive way, while Connor represents more mental and physical suffering. Both actors carry the weight of these feelings with finesse and vulnerability, which serves the film's purpose very well. The film also raises a number of questions that struck me. To what extent can technology or various services alleviate our psychological needs? Is this a good solution? In our world, where all services, whatever they may be, are invariably found in an application on some device, it's pertinent to raise these questions

From a technical point of view, Blank Shores is aesthetically polished and sober, and the choice of landscapes and settings is judicious. The whole effectively supports the heavy, mysterious atmosphere that envelops the film. The direction is solid, and the craftsmen, obviously deeply invested in the theme and creative process of their work, succeed in conveying their message.

J’ai découvert récemment un court-métrage de science-fiction particulièrement touchant qui est un petit bijou, Blank Shores (2021). C’est la prémisse de l’oeuvre qui m’a particulièrement intéressée. Le réalisateur / scénariste, Alex Kyrou, y explore les émotions reliées à la perte d’un être cher, à la capacité de gérer celles-ci et notre état mental. Ce sont des thématiques qui me rejoignent beaucoup et, étant intégrées dans un contexte de science-fiction, cette histoire avait tout pour attirer mon attention.

Emily (Georgina Campbell) est une jeune femme qui traverse une période difficile et tente de se remettre de la perte d’un être cher. Elle y arrive tant bien que mal, mais son partenaire, Connor (James Farrar) est absent. Devant un corps policier qui n’apporte que peu de soutien et des rêves particulièrement troublant, Emily se met à la recherche de Connor. Une investigation qui la porte vers un monde mystérieux et inquiétant.

J’ai apprécié la dichotomie dépeinte à travers les deux protagonistes principaux. Emily gère son traumatisme de manière forte et assumée tandis que Connor représente davantage la souffrance mentale et physique. Les deux acteurs portent le poids de ces sentiments avec un jeu tout en finesse et avec vulnérabilité, ce qui sert très bien le propos du film. On y retrouve également des questionnements qui m’ont interpellé. À quel point la technologie ou différents services peuvent pallier à nos besoins psychologiques? Est-ce une bonne solution? Dans notre monde où tous les services, quels qu’ils soient, se retrouvent invariablement dans une application sur un appareil quelconque, il est pertinent de poser ces questions.

D’un point de vue technique, Blank Shores est esthétiquement léché et sobre et le choix des paysages et décors est judicieux. Le tout appuie efficacement l’atmosphère lourde et mystérieuse qui enveloppe le film. La réalisation est solide et les artisans, de toute évidence très investis dans le thème et le processus créatif de leur oeuvre, réussissent bien à transmettre leur message.
